Best things to do in Bohinj | What not to miss in Bohinj
You plan to visit Bohinj and you are wondering what are the best things to do in Bohinj? Then you should continue reading.
Bohinj is a green oasis in the heart of Triglav national park. Especially in the summer months, Bohinj offers some gorgeous hiking treks, the views will blow your mind.
In Bohinj, you will also find my favorite Slovenian lake, Bohinj Lake. The lake is the largest natural lake in Slovenia, situated in the heart of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park. So, if you are not in hiking mode you can swim in the clean fresh crystal lake water and just relax and enjoy the view.
If you are the more adventurous type, you can visit the adventure park, where you can easily spend a whole day. Also, kayaking and climbing are an option.
In the winter you can ski on Ski resort Vogel, try yourself in ice skating, sledding, hiking and so on.
When to visit Bohinj
Geographical properties offer diverse sports and the possibility of complete relaxation is the reason for visiting the place at any time of the year.
The best time to visit Bohinj is, without a doubt, the summer – from May to September, the weather is nice and it’s not so cold anymore. In the summer, the temperature can be rising over 25 degrees, in the hottest months even over 30 degrees. On the colder nights, you can expect around 15 degrees.
I recommend you to visit in July or August because at that time is possible to swim in the lake, the only problem is that there is a lot of tourists. If you come in the summer you should pack light clothes but also a waterproof coat or something similar if there is some unexpected rain.
If you come in the winter you should be ready for cold conditions. The coldest months are January and February, the average temperature is around 2 degrees, you can also expect snow. Dress warmly in the winter months, don’t forget the hat, warm socks and gloves, they will keep you warm.
In the summer lake water heats up to 22 degrees and in the winter it often freezes.
How to reach Bohinj
You can come to Bohinj in different ways: by bike, by car or rented car, by a motor, taxi, bus or train, and various combinations of some of them.
If you come by car be careful where you park! There are people giving parking tickets on every corner and you will get a fine if you park wrong, that’s for sure.
So, if you come in the top season (July, August) I recommend you to come by bus or train. Bohinj is connected with all the main cities in Slovenia, you also avoid parking space problem.
Bus
Regular bus connections allow you to come to Bohinj from all over Slovenia. If you come from Ljubljana I recommend the line Ljubljana – Kranj – Bled – Bohinjska Bistrica – Bohinj Zlatorog. More information:
Train
If you want to reach Bohinj by train you can come from Jesenice or Nova Gorica. More information:

Food in Bohinj
There is a lot of restaurants to eat at around Bohinj, so you have plenty of options where to eat, a lot of them serve delicious homemade food. Food to try in Bohinj:
If you like a dish on a spoon (at least this is how we call it) you should try:
- beef goulash
- boar goulash (typical for this part of Slovenia)
- jota (sauerkraut stew with beans and potatoes)
- pasulj (soup with beans).
Pasulj and jota are usually served with local sausage.
Other typical dishes for this region:
- fish (Bohinj trout) with potatoes, it is a specialty of this area
- ajdovi krapi are made out of buckwheat flour, filled with millet porridge and curd cheese, they are delicious
- štruklji – Slovenian classic, you can eat them sweet or salty. Struklji is dough stuffed with all sorts of fillings, curd cheese is the most common one.
If you are a cheese lover you have to try the famous Bohinj cheese, a local product from Bohinj. The cheese is very good quality, it is made out of cow milk, and it has a nice and recognizable aromatic flavor.
